About the laboratory

The laboratory of Magnetic research Materials (MMM) was created within the framework of the Federal project "Development of scientific and production cooperation" by Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation: creation of world-class laboratories under the leadership of leading scientists with a world name. The head of the laboratory is Michael Viktor Nikolaus Farle, a well-known specialist in the field of physics of new magnetic materials. Professor Farle is a highly cited author, recognised by the international scientific community as a highly qualified specialist in the physics of magnetic phenomena.

The laboratory's work is aimed at the development, research and testing of new magnetic, superconducting and high temperature oxidation resistant MAX materials for use in information storage and processing, permanent magnets, and magnetic refrigeration technology.

The generel objectives of research starting in 2020 till the end of 2021 are currently:

  1. Synthesis of thin films of new magnetic MAX-phases based on 3d elements.
  2. Synthesis of thin films of new magnetic MAX-phases including rare earth elements.
  3. Synthesis of thin films of superconducting MAX-phases.
  4. Chemical, structural and magnetic characterisation of synthesised films.
  5. Optimization of the  magnetic properties (magnetic anisotropy, magnetisation, magnetic ordering temperature) by doping and combinatorial film growth approaches including compositional and thickness gradient synthesis.
  6. Growth of multi-layer “hybrid” MAX-phase films with different layer compositions.
  7. Delamination of MAX-phase films to produce two-dimensional materials (MXenes) for different applications.
  8. Studies of spin, electronic, and thermal diffusion transport in two-dimensional MXenes.

 Conferences

  • International workshop on functional MAX-materials (1st FunMax) with an integrated 2-day school for students, August 6-12, Krasnoyarsk.
